Our Mission

The mission of Portsmouth High School is to be an ever-improving, respectful community where all students are challenged as individuals to develop intellectual curiosities and to use immense bodies of knowledge proficiently as they learn to value the past, thrive in the present and prepare for the future.

Our Location

Portsmouth is a residential community of approximately 17,000 residents. It is located in Newport County on Aquidneck Island: 60 miles south of Boston; 22 miles southeast of Provi- dence; and approximately 10 miles from Fall River, Massachusetts. Also located on Aquidneck Island are the City of Newport, a major historical tourist attraction, the U.S. Naval Base, Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Raytheon and several other high-tech support systems, providing major employment opportunities in the community. Residents are mainly business and professional families

Our Community

Portsmouth High School is a learning community of approximately 800 students and 78 certified teachers dedicated to preparing the young men and women of Portsmouth and Little Compton to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our school has been recognized as a commended school by the Rhode Island Department of Education and has been honored by The College Board as an AP Honor Roll School for our participation and achievement in Advanced Placement Learning. We are fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Programs and vocational and technical education are available at the Newport Area Career & Technical Center. Portsmouth High School hosts several programs for Career and Technical Education.
