Highlights-Melville Elementary

School Year-2020-2021

  • Teachers and Staff bravely welcomed back In Person and Distance Learners. Teachers had to rethink all their instructional practices and stepped up to be dedicated advocates for children during the pandemic.

  • We kicked off our year with a Beep and Greet for families and materials pick-up.  

  • RI Education Commissioner Infante Green visited our school during student arrival during our first week open.

  • Continued to successfully implement a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)  framework and reamina a model school.

  • Earned the FH Prince Grant for approximately $5,000 to bring the Skate Pass (skateboarding curriculum) to our students.

  • Grade 1 has been awarded the CS4RI Grant to support the integration of a K-2 computer science curriculum into core content areas. This grant opportunity includes professional development and technology equipment.

  • Melville Parent Teacher Group engaged and supported our community through fundraising efforts.

  • Collected food items during the holiday season.

  • Hosted a Cereal Drive in partnership with PHS during the Spring.

  • Raising money for the PHS Post Prom party with “Hats off to the Graduates”.

  • Contributing to their own well being by participating in Wellness Week in partnership with Herren Project.

  • Made  cards for those in assisted living during the holiday season and to Healthcare workers to show our appreciation.

  • Teachers participated in professional development with Scarlett Lewis (founder and CEO of Choose Love).  As an elementary community we then rolled out the Choose Love curriculum with great success.

  • We greeted our students with live music Monday through Wednesday performed by music teacher Mr. Arruda.

  • Aquidneck Island Land Trust awarded one Melville student the writing recognition and two other Melville students the art recognition, per their age groups. 

  • Held a “Grade 3 Balloon Parade”. 

  • Collaboratively recognized as a Green Ribbon district in partnership with Hathaway and Portsmouth Middle School.

  • The Outdoor Learning Adventure Zone has been an incredible experience for students and students are taking ownership in caring for this space. 

  • Grade levels kept open permission slips, so that classes could visit Melville Pond.

  • Installed raised garden beds and students both plant and care for plants. 

  • Celebrations:

  • Whaledone Slips-Students continue to receive Whaledone slips for modeling our expectations of being Respectful, Responsible, Safe and Ready to Learn.  

  • On Friday mornings we recognized weekly grade level role models.  Students received a certificate and token.  We then played a schoolwide trivia game. 

  • We hosted Virtual Community Gatherings and individual classrooms were recognized for Sportsmanship, Outstanding Art, being Scholarly Readers, and Excellent Musicians, and of course a class was selected as the Class Whaledone of the month.

  • Students made posters for High School seniors as they marched our hallways before graduation.

  • Continued partnership with Anchored for Life with our student leadership team. 

  • Continued partnership with the Special Olympics and received funding to purchase  adaptive equipment.

  • Continued partnership with The Feinstein Foundation

  • Clean Ocean Access-Developed partnership and started a composting initiative with grade 4.  Participated in a compost bake sail. 

  • We safelyhosted an In Person Scholastic Book Fair and reading week.  Reading week had spirit days and Book Bingo with the Principal.
